iPod 9th Birthday

Happy birthday to you...
Happy birthday to you...
Happy birthday to iPod...
Happy birthday to you

That's what everybody was singing October 23rd 2010. 9 years ago(seems like a century to me) Apple launched it's first ever "iPod". Today is it's 9 year birthday, and look how many versions it has passed all these years.

The iPod was first launched October 23 2001 and turned into a family of successful music players. The first ever iPod had 5 gigabytes of memory(means that it can store about 1000 songs) and had a classic click wheel. Since then, we have seen super tiny iPods to Big ones. 9 years ago, you could fit 1000 songs. Today, you can fit 40000. Now we have touch-iPods that surf the web and play games, even take pictures!

The iPod is the item that inspired iPhone and iPad, without iPod, you would probably be using a dumb phone that does not play music, use apps, or any feature that you see today.

The name "iPod" was first thought of by copywriter Vinnie Chieco. He thought of this name because when he first saw the prototype, he remembered the saying: "open the pod bay door, HAL" .Chieco thought the relationship between the media player and a personal computer was similar to the small space pods in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the large Discovery mothership.
